Personal Savings at NexTier Bank

Five savings products that cover the full life cycle of a Western Pennsylvania household — Statement Savings for the emergency fund, Money Market for larger cash positions, Holiday Club for seasonal budgeting, Young Savers for children and IRA Savings for retirement. Each one is FDIC-insured to $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category, separately from checking balances.

Savings decisions are transparent: no teaser rates, no bait-and-switch. The rate sheet is posted in every branch and recalculated monthly to reflect the FDIC-published national deposit environment. Contribution rules for IRA savings follow the annual IRS limit schedule.

Which Savings Product Fits Which Goal

Savings products at NexTier Bank are not interchangeable. Each one is engineered for a distinct job: emergency fund, parked cash, year-end budgeting, child financial literacy or retirement contributions.

Statement Savings

$50 minimum deposit. The default emergency-fund account. Compounded daily, credited quarterly. No monthly fee with eStatements. Unlimited in-branch and ATM transfers to a linked checking account. Use it to build the classic 3-6 months of expenses cushion.

Money Market Savings

$2,500 to open. Tiered APY across four balance bands. Limited check-writing. The right place for a larger cash position — a down-payment fund, an estate-settlement holding account, or working capital between a sale and the next investment. See money market for tier detail.

Holiday Club

$10 to open. Weekly or bi-weekly automatic transfers from checking. Balance sweeps back on the first business day of November. No early withdrawal without closing the account. A classic Western-PA budgeting tool — originally for Christmas, now equally used for heating-oil pre-pay, property-tax lump sums and summer camps.

Young Savers

Under-18 only, opened with a parent or legal guardian as custodian under Pennsylvania UTMA. $10 minimum. Slightly higher APY on the first $1,000. A training account for allowance, birthday money and the first earned-income paychecks. Converts to Statement Savings or Free Checking on the 18th birthday.

IRA Savings

Traditional, Roth and SEP options available. Contributions follow the annual IRS limit schedule. FDIC coverage is separate from other categories — $250,000 on retirement deposits in addition to regular savings. Open with a branch appointment; custodial forms require original signatures.

FDIC Coverage Stacking

A household can legitimately hold well above $250,000 in insured deposits by using multiple ownership categories: single accounts, joint accounts, retirement accounts and revocable trust accounts each carry separate $250,000 coverage. The FDIC insurance-estimator tool walks through the arithmetic.

How Savings Interacts With the Rest of the Account

A savings product is rarely standalone. Most customers pair it with a checking account and use automated rules to build the balance without conscious effort.

Automated Transfers & Round-Ups

Link Statement Savings to Free Checking and schedule a weekly or payday transfer in online banking. Round-up transfers send the cents from each Debit Mastercard purchase to savings automatically. This quietly builds the emergency fund without requiring a budgeting conversation.

Transfers are same-day between NexTier accounts. External-bank transfers settle in 1-3 business days via ACH.

IRA Savings & Retirement Planning

IRA Savings accounts at NexTier Bank are straightforward deposit IRAs — not brokerage IRAs. They earn a tiered APY, carry FDIC coverage to $250,000 separately from regular savings, and accept contributions up to the annual IRS limit. The annual limit for 2026 and catch-up provisions for accountholders 50+ are published on the IRS website.

Tax treatment of Traditional vs Roth contributions is specific to each household; a qualified tax adviser should be consulted before electing a path.

Overdraft Protection Link

A Statement Savings balance can be linked to personal checking as overdraft protection. If the checking balance is insufficient for a posted transaction, funds sweep automatically from savings. The transfer fee is typically $5, which is materially less than an NSF fee on an unprotected account. The bank follows CFPB representment-fee guidance.

Customers can opt out of overdraft protection entirely and rely on transaction denial instead — a perfectly valid posture for tight-budget households.
