Free electronic bill pay for every NexTier Bank personal and business accountholder. Over 7,000 pre-loaded billers including Pennsylvania utilities, federal and state tax agencies, national telecoms, insurance carriers, credit card issuers and mortgage servicers. Unknown payees fall back to a printed paper cheque mailed by the bank.

Service Brief

Bill pay at the community bank without the fine-print surprises.

Pre-loaded Billers

7,000+ billers already in the directory. Pennsylvania utilities (PECO, Duquesne Light, Penn Power, Peoples Natural Gas, Columbia Gas), Pennsylvania Department of Revenue, Internal Revenue Service for 1040 estimated tax, telecom (Verizon, Xfinity, AT&T, T-Mobile), insurance (State Farm, Geico, Progressive, Erie), credit cards (Chase, Capital One, American Express) and mortgage servicers.

Paper-Check Fallback

If a payee is not in the electronic directory (a landlord, a neighbourhood lawn service, a medical specialist who still mails invoices), bill pay prints and mails a paper cheque on the accountholder's behalf. Typical delivery 5 to 7 business days. No fee for the printed-cheque fallback.

Recurring Schedules

Any biller can be set up as a recurring schedule with weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual cadence. Fixed amount or prompt-before-send variable amount. Email or push alerts the morning of each scheduled debit. Cancel or pause a schedule from either web or mobile.

ePay-to-Anyone

Need to send funds to a private individual? Use Zelle inside the mobile app for minutes-level transfer to another US bank accountholder, or bill pay's paper-cheque fallback for recipients without a Zelle-enrolled bank. For large payments over $2,500, consider a wire transfer instead.

Portal Mechanics

How bill pay actually works under the covers.

Electronic Posting

Electronic payments route via the nationwide bill-pay consortium. NexTier Bank debits the accountholder's funding account on the business day after submission and transmits the remittance file to the receiving biller's processor. Most major billers post same-day when the file arrives before their daily batch cutoff.

The accountholder's funding account must carry sufficient cleared balance at 6:00am ET on the debit date. Insufficient balance triggers a reversal and an email alert. There is no returned-item fee on bill pay, but the payee may charge their own late fee if the payment arrives past its due date.

Paper-Cheque Fallback

When a payee is not electronic, the bank prints a cheque against a remittance account and mails it to the payee's address on file. The cheque clears only when the payee deposits it — the funding account is debited when the cheque posts, not when the cheque is mailed. Expect 5 to 7 business days to reach the payee, plus 2 to 5 business days for the payee to deposit.

For time-sensitive payments to non-electronic payees, schedule 10 business days in advance to avoid late-fee risk. For federal tax and state tax payments, prefer electronic routing via the IRS or PA Department of Revenue biller entries; see general guidance at irs.gov.

Experience Profile

How households and small businesses at NexTier Bank use bill pay.

Household Monthly

Mortgage, electric, gas, water, internet, two credit cards: seven recurring schedules, all set for the 28th of each month. One email per month confirms the batch. Nothing is late. No stamps, no envelopes.

Quarterly Estimated Tax

Self-employed accountholders schedule four Form 1040 estimated tax payments per year via the IRS biller entry in bill pay. Each posts the next business day. eStatements archive each payment for seven years — easy audit trail.

Small Business Vendor Payments

A small business pays 20 vendors monthly. Recurring schedules for fixed-amount vendors (rent, insurance) plus one-time entries for variable vendors. Export to QuickBooks keeps reconciliation clean. Dual-control ready if the business upgrades to commercial online banking.
